A Community-Driven Festival
Held the first weekend in August, from Thursday through Sunday, Mile of Music transforms Appleton into a haven for music lovers. The festival is a collaborative community event, bolstered by the support of nearly 50 business and community sponsors. This local backing not only underscores the community’s commitment to the arts but also highlights the integral role that local businesses play in making the festival a reality.
The brainchild of marketing executive Dave Willems and Willems Marketing, Inc., the festival was conceived with a clear vision: to create a platform for original music. Willems, whose firm specializes in community and non-profit projects, brought on board Appleton’s own Cory Chisel, a Nashville-based touring artist at the time. Together, with the dedicated staff at Willems Marketing, they laid the foundation for what would become a beloved annual tradition.
A Celebration of Original Music
Mile of Music is distinctive for its unwavering focus on original music. From folk and indie rock to soul, alternative, R&B, blues, and country, the festival showcases a diverse array of genres. Each year, it features over 225 performers and nearly 1,000 performances, creating a vibrant mosaic of sounds that appeal to a wide range of musical tastes.
The festival’s mantra, “Artists you may not know but should,” captures its essence perfectly. It serves as a platform for largely undiscovered, touring musicians and bands, giving them a stage to share their unique sounds with an appreciative audience. The “cover-free” policy—no cover songs and no cover charges—ensures that the focus remains squarely on original artistry, fostering an environment where creativity thrives.
Impacting the Community
The impact of Mile of Music extends beyond the four days of performances. The festival has a significant creative economic impact on the local community, drawing visitors from near and far, who contribute to the local economy. Hotels, restaurants, and shops buzz with activity, benefiting from the influx of festival-goers.
Moreover, the festival is deeply committed to fostering the next generation of musicians. Proceeds and donations from Mile of Music support local youth music education and scholarships, ensuring that the spirit of creativity and community continues to flourish in Appleton.
A Taste of Appleton: Americana Pale Ale
The festival’s influence even extends to local flavors. Stone Arch Brewpub, a staple in the Appleton community, created the Americana Pale Ale in honor of the festival. This craft beer embodies the spirit of Mile of Music, offering festival-goers a taste of local craftsmanship that complements the rich sounds of the performances.
